About Fantasie #1 "A Night Without Sleep" by Danae Vlasse: This composition incorporates many varied moods; from a peaceful semi-conscious state and flights of fancy to intense anxiety, frustration, and even anger. The main thematic material is expressed at the beginning, and then there emerges a new theme in the middle (at 4'18). Melodies are introduced in a simple manner but then return cyclically through the work (expressed both in treble and bass registers, in augmentation and inversion, and themes are often layered on top of one-another); each thematic reiteration is imbued with new emotion. The work ends with a fanciful drifting toward abandonment of sleeplessness. This composition was awarded the Gold Medal in Composition by the Prestige Music Awards, 2013.
