Poème is a CLASSICAL
SOLO VOCAL ALBUM
of Music Inspired by Poetry.
Original Compositions by Danaë Vlasse,
Featuring Art Songs and Romantic Instrumentals with performances by Sopranos Hila Plitmann & Sangeeta Kaur, as well as Internationally-Acclaimed Pianist Robert Thies, and LA Opera Principal Cellist John Walz.
Poème is a collection of nine original compositions inspired by poetry, presented by composer-pianist Danaë Xanthe Vlasse and the distinguished artists she has gathered for this album. Seven romantic art songs based on French poetry are brought to life by award-winning soprano Hila Plitmann and acclaimed pianist Robert Thies. The songs also feature the talents of visionary soprano Sangeeta Kaur and cellist John Walz. The composer herself contributes performances of two works for solo piano. Vlasse’s songs, which set texts written during the 19th century as well as contemporaneously, are driven by the grandiose ideals that define Romantic culture: admiration for nature, celebration of history, devotion to family and the alternating torture and bliss of love for another person. The moods of Poème express the full range of life, from feelings of melancholy, to anger, seduction and joyous abandon.

SOLSTICE
Danaë Xanthe Vlasse, pianist & composer http://www.danaevlasse.com/
Mischa Lefkowitz, violin http://www.mischalefkowitz.com/
Album Notes: Violinist Mischa Lefkowitz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic performs original compositions by award-winning composer and pianist Danaë Xanthe Vlasse. The music is lyrical and poignant as it explores states of transition in people and in nature. People experience myriad transitional and, often, ambiguous emotional states; this album explores an intersection of the conscious mind and the subconscious while caught in dreams, memories, and longing. The album presents these concepts against the backdrop of transitions in nature, as portrayed through the ebb-and-flow of ocean tides, the passage of day into night, and the cycle of the seasons.
About each work:
1) Rêverie: A dream-state of worshipping the moon and admiring the simultaneous opacity and brilliance of the night-sky.
2) Nocturne Pour Caline: An emotional remembrance of a beloved pet, focusing on the impermanence of companionship.
3) Trois Chansons for Violin and Piano: I) An ephemeral time of blissful perfection.
4) Trois Chansons for Violin and Piano: II) A bittersweet commemoration of a lost child.
5) Trois Chansons for Violin and Piano: III) Longing for a city and a way of life - both lost in war.
6) Berceuse Pour Beau: A lullaby in honor of a stoic journey through pain and into solace.
7) Nocturne-Meditation: Reflections of a night spent in introspection and morning of epiphany.
8) The Sea: A contemplative imagination gone adrift, obsessing over the ocean tides and yearning for the unattainable.
9) Solstice Serenade: The Solstice marks either the longest day or the longest night of the year. This pivotal day bears the emotional weight we ascribe to the value of day or night. Either way, whatever positive or negative associations we make with length of daylight hours, the very opposite will incrementally advance through the following half of the year.

Album Notes Award-winning composer and pianist Danaë Xanthe Vlasse offers a collection of new works for piano in the style of the great 19th century Romantic tradition. Each type of piece seeks a different sort of experience, from feeling simple moments of quiet pleasure to great prolonged adventures full of contrasting moods. The three “Fantaisies” are grandest in scope and tell epic stories of emotional battles such as succumbing to madness, facing the unknown, defying death and overcoming great internal obstacles. The “Nocturnes” seek to explore different night-time landscapes; some are quite serene while others are more imposing. The “Petite Valses” were all conceived as little lullabies. And finally the three “Préludes” celebrate scenes of daily life, each one inspired by a different mood.
Danaë Xanthe Vlasse has been praised by critics and audiences for her neo-Romantic writing, which has been described as “a current of old-world tension and modern angst.” Critics have also praised her patient and regimented approach to composition as “crafted with absolute depth and emotional presence.” Mrs. Vlasse’s native France is a clear influence in her harmonic language and melodic ideas, while her Greek heritage guides her Classical approach to structure with balanced form and carefully measured phrases. Mrs. Vlasse lives in Los Angeles, where she is engaged in music-making with the finest musicians of Southern California, and she also collaborates with musicians and other composers from all over the world.
